Jacobs technicians begin each day at home around 7:00 or 7:30 a.m with their company-provided van and gas card. Technicians are mobile-dispatched. The night before, you receive information about your first call via text message and can view the day’s schedule on your company smartphone or tablet. Troubleshooting calls get more frequent when harsh weather sets in, so we have an 11-week on-call rotation to make sure everyone gets breaks.
Like technicians, most Jacobs installers have company vehicles and gas cards. A typical day starts with a trip to our office in SE Portland around 7:00 or 7:30 a.m. A supervisor there briefs you on your job for the day. You pick up the tools and equipment you need and head out. Jacobs handles three types of installation projects:
Our apprenticeship programs are designed to help us support and mentor the next generation of HVAC experts. An apprenticeship with Jacobs involves paid on-the-job training with an experienced professional as well as classroom instruction. By the end of our four-year program, you’ll be fully prepared for a successful HVAC career. If you have little to no experience or don’t meet the apprenticeship application requirements, we also offer more informal training opportunities. We can help you get your HVAC career off to a great start with hands-on training, job shadowing, and industry seminars.
Whether you are an HVAC newcomer or a seasoned professional with decades of experience, you will find opportunities to grow at Jacobs Heating & Air Conditioning. We have more than 100 employees and many of them have been with us for 10, 20, and even 30 years. As a family-owned and operated company, we love our Portland area community. Since our beginning in 1952 Jacobs’ employees have helped earn us our reputation as Portland’s HVAC industry leader. We got where we are today by treating our team members right. We give them the tools and training and opportunities they need to succeed and thrive.
The size of our company allows us to promote from within and offer lots of advancement opportunities. Ongoing training ensures your skill set is always improving. From apprentices and entry-level positions to mid-level technicians to long-term employees — the learning never stops. Everyone receives training, both in-house and externally at industry seminars. All Jacobs technicians and installers have CFC and NATE certifications. We train our employees to be the best and love to see them succeed. We are proud to have watched many previous employees take what they have learned at Jacobs and start their own companies.
A workday for a Jacobs technician might involve a trip up to NE Portland to investigate a troublesome air conditioner or a drive down to Newberg for regularly scheduled maintenance. Installers begin their day with a stop at our SE Portland office to pick up tools and equipment before they head to their destination.
Jacobs serves all of the Portland and Vancouver metro area, completing retrofits of existing homes, new construction, and commercial projects. We operate in both the residential and commercial markets which gives our employees the opportunity to get trained in a wide variety of applications.
I’ve worked in different companies, but no other company compares to how Jacobs treats their employees. They will make sure you always have what you need and will support you to make sure you put your family first. Part of the Jacobs’ culture is to make sure everyone gets along out in the field. We are all like a big family when we work together. We all help each other learn and grow. You won’t regret deciding to start your career at Jacobs. They will give you trust and help you grow in anyway you want.
